There’s no denying it now. 2010 has well and truly arrived and the new decade is zooming along at a rocketing pace. How are those New Year’s resolutions faring by now? More than likely they have been left by the wayside somewhere back in January. Yet there’s still time for a change to your look, whether it be a drastic new haircut or flirting briefly with a new eye colour. We have sourced some outstanding beauty trends for 2010 taking our cues from the experts who have a keen eye on what’s happening around the globe. Nothing is more ageing than sticking with a look from the time period you felt you looked best in (especially if said period happened to be the 80’s). The below trends are intended to be inspiration for experimentation during the fledgling year ahead.

10.6.08 Beyonce Single Ladies Video photo by Lisa LoganNails: Applying Swarovski crystal art to your fingertips is so 2009. This year will instead be the year of the Minx. It can take time for trends to filter their way down from Hollywood to the real world but Minx nails are worth the wait. If you have being living under the proverbial rock you may not have seen Beyonce sporting perfect metallic nails in her ‘Single Ladies’ video clip. The high sheen look does not come from polish but instead from Minx’s film-y covering applied to the nails with heat. It last days (or weeks on the toes) and comes in a variety of colours and patterns. The first salon to introduce it in Australia is Ottoman 3.

Face: MAC’s senior artist in Australia is Nicole Williams who tells us that one of the prominent looks in makeup for the upcoming season is what she refers to as “American Nomad”. The look is a modern version of the tan but rather than looking beach-bronzed, you want to aim for a healthy “I’ve just been spending a lot of time adventuring outdoors” aesthetic. Look for natural muted browns like tawny, taupe and twig rather than shimmery coppers. You want to sculpt the face with colour over the eyes and cheeks with a pale matte lip without defining your face1features with mascara or eye liner. The look has featured recently on the runways of Chloe, Balmain and Herve Leger.

Skin: Working well with MAC’s ideal ‘American Nomad’ look is the direction for our skin in 2010. According to Rae Morris, who is L’Oreal Australia’s Make-Up Artist extraordinaire, matte skin is back in fashion in a big way. It’s great for those with oily skin and for those with more mature skin and it will not highlight wrinkles. You should prime and moisturise your skin well to avoid a chalk-like finish and end up satiny smooth. Favour 1940’s glamour over sparkle and shine this year. Just go easy on the powder.

Hair: We’ve noticed bleached eyebrows are popping up everywhere for 2010. The look may be too extreme for most so we’ll just stick to revamping the hair on top of our heads for now. Long hair with soft 1970’s waves at the ends is in. This is handy as the team at Fashionising have looked to the Spring runways and have picked long braids as the hairstyle dujour. The look is a little unkempt – fantastic that we can save time on blow-drying and straightening – just make sure to keep up the deep conditioning treatments so your tresses don’t end up looking strung out.

Colour: Be on the lookout for Turquoise which should be the hue of the year as crowned by colour leaders Pantone. We all know by now that blue eye-shadow is a dangerous thing and dying your locks blue should be left to the indie kids. Yet turquoise on the nails, especially summer toes, can look quite striking. If you must use it on the face, stick to a subtle and restrained slick of blue green eyeliner for an edgy look. Or even try coloured contacts for a dramatic change.
